S1 Ep000 Welcome to Towards a Kinder Public

Towards a Kinder Public is the podcast of Kinderpublic, an interdisciplinary design consultancy. We are working to create kinder public space: more inclusive, accessible, equitable, and sustainable.  Interviewing experts from a variety of roles and backgrounds, from architects, poets, conservationists, equity consultants, farmers, scientists, disability advocates, to historians, we discover the meaningful role that each of us can play in the work of making things better.  The first step is becoming aware of the experiences of the people around us - this podcast tells those stories.

Season 1, Episode 0: Welcome to Towards a Kinder Public

[Sounds of a busy outdoor market fade in and out]

Cevan Castle (Host):

This is Towards a Kinder Public.

I’m Cevan Castle, and along with Annie Chen, we are Kinderpublic.

[Sounds of children and birds at a playground fade in and out]

We are architectural designers researching public space and what it means to design a kinder space - that is, public space that works better for more of its users. Space that brings people together by meeting needs.

In our research, we have repeatedly found that the needs of all people in public space are interconnected.

[Sounds of people crossing the main hall of a busy transportation station fade in and out]

As we defined user groups and studied the effects of spatial and amenity design, a striking fact became clear: the people we studied, with different lives, different bodies, and different circumstances, moving through and using public space very much as individuals, were collectively, positively impacted by many of the same amenities and resources.

[Sounds of a subway platform and passing train fade in and out]

We have learned that there is a way to design space, to cultivate awareness of the experiences of the people around us, and to activate the space with our presence, that improves it.

[Sounds of birds in a city park]

This means that we can all find a meaningful role in the work of making things better.

Our guiding belief at Kinderpublic is that going beyond what is required is the way to achieve a kinder public space- one that is more inclusive, accessible, equitable, and sustainable.

Becoming aware is the first step.
